Association was started in 1977. It is a result of the 1 CONC outstanding efforts of many individuals too numerous to mention. However, 1 CONC two people stand out as key founders. 1 CONT 1 CONT We begin with our Genealogist, George E. Williams. He wrote the 1 CONC definitive book on the Bolles genealogy. This was a massive undertaking 1 CONC requiring many years of effort and involving the writing of hundreds of 1 CONC letters before the age of computerized word processors! His Great Aunt, 1 CONC Anna Bolles Williams, had performed considerable work in genealogy and 1 CONC had instilled that interest in George. He was a founder of the 1 CONC Connecticut Society of Genealogists. He published "A GENEALOGY of the 1 CONC Descendants of JOSEPH BOLLES of Wells, Maine Vol. 1" in 1970. A Volume 2 1 CONC was published in 1989 providing corrections, updates and additional 1 CONC information on the Bolles Family. George passed away 10 Feb 1998 at the 1 CONC age of 97. 1 CONT 1 CONT JAMES EDWARD BOLLES(#2853), of Norwalk, CT is the founder of our Bolles 1 CONC Family Association. 1 CONT 1 CONT With his wife Norma they have hosted four national Bolles Family 1 CONC reunions, three Bolles Family tours to England, and as a team they 1 CONC contribute greatly to the success of our National Bolles reunions, where 1 CONC Jim's genealogical show, "What's His Name" is always a feature event. 1 CONT 1 CONT The following article is by Jim Bolles: 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT HOW THE BOLLES FAMILY ASSOCIATION CAME INTO BEING: 1 CONT 1 CONT It all began during WWII. While being stationed at the U.S. Submarine 1 CONC Base, New London, Connecticut during Sub School days, I happened to 1 CONC wander into "Ye Ancient Burial Grounds" while on liberty from the base. 1 CONC At the time I had no knowledge of my ancestral connections, so you can 1 CONC imagine my surprise at finding headstones with my surname on them. I 1 CONC still did not think I was connected in any way. The war ended and I went 1 CONC to New York City where I began my career as an illustrator. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the late 1960's I received a letter from George Williams asking for 1 CONC information about my immediate family members to be used in a genealogy 1 CONC he was writing about the Bolles family of Nottingham, England and New 1 CONC London, Connecticut. Since he lived a short distance away I called him 1 CONC and he agreed to see Norma and me which we did, and that is where the 1 CONC story really began. 1 CONT 1 CONT When the genealogy was published in 1970 I became completely absorbed in 1 CONC our family's history both in the U.S.A. and England. After thoroughly 1 CONC exploring our Connecticut roots, I decided to go to England and explore 1 CONC the sites listed in George's book. There, Norma and I met a wonderful 1 CONC man, John Holland, and became fast friends of the Holland family. John 1 CONC helped me locate most of the Lincolnshire sites which included the famous 1 CONC Jacobean Arch in the tiny village of Scampton, Lincolnshire. After a 1 CONC number of visits I could see that the Arch was suffering severe damage, 1 CONC mostly caused by high winds. I informed the owner of the property where 1 CONC the Arch stands, that I was concerned that the Arch might collapse if 1 CONC repairs were not done soon and to contact me if he wanted my help to 1 CONC raise funds to save it. 1 CONT 1 CONT About a year later he contacted me and said that a local archaeological 1 CONC organization wanted to save the Arch. I contacted George and asked for 1 CONC the names and addresses of those who had purchased his genealogy, He was 1 CONC happy to help me with his list. I then sent out over 300 letters to those 1 CONC people who didn't know me from Adam, asking for their help. The response 1 CONC was immediate and I was able to send over within a few months, $1,600 1 CONC which was the seed money needed to raise funds in England. It took three 1 CONC years to complete the full restoration of the Arch at a final cost of 1 CONC about $15,000. The British said without the American interest and initial 1 CONC funds, the project would not have proceeded. 1 CONT 1 CONT With the success of the Arch restoration assured, I wrote to all persons 1 CONC who contributed and suggested a family reunion in New London Connecticut 1 CONC to commemorate our successful efforts to save part of our family's 1 CONC heritage in England. The first national reunion of the Bolles family 1 CONC members took place in 1977 at Poor Richards Restaurant, New London, 1 CONC Connecticut.
